A jug of wine and....
Design has
always been with us. It began when the first humans
shaped the tools they were using, decorated the vessels
they stored food in, pieced together the first covering
they wore on their bodies. The things we shape and use
are an extension of us, our society, who we are as a
species. They reflect our very being and we, as
designers, are charged with reflecting that being. We,
as a society, struggle with the new shapes; if they fit,
they’re used, if they don’t, they’re thrown away. We as
designers need to have an intuitive finger on the pulse
of humankind to be successful. We are the artists who
are expressing what the rest of us are feeling and
saying about our tools and surroundings. It’s all
manifested in a fairly sophisticated way though
marketing, engineering and manufacturing, but in reality
it’s a direct expression of who we collectively are.
I believe the
designers who have the hubris to say they are going to
change society are egocentric. We, as designers, don’t
really change society, rather, we reflect it. If we do
it well people enjoy or appreciate or are even motivated
by what we’ve done, but we don’t make changes to what
society is.
What we must do
as designers is pay attention, use all of our skills and
talent to be on top of, not only where we are, but what
is the next step we, as a society, are ready to take and
then push. And, do it in a way that is beautiful,
competent and fulfilling to the user. Bring joy, bring
fun. |
